Our Sisterhood
Open Meetings | Gift Shop | Morning & Evening Book Groups
Shabbat Lectures | Rosh Chodesh Group | Mah Jongg
Rodfei Zedek Sisterhood continues our 100+ year tradition of enhancing congregational life through programming and fund-raising activities. Our monthly Monday afternoon meetings provide educational and entertaining programs, open to women and men of the Congregation and their friends.
See our 2011-12 schedule online, beginning with "An Introduction to the Jewish Contribution to the Great American Songbook" on October 17, and including Sisterhood Shabbat on February 11, chamber music on February 20, and the Dawn Rubin Torah Study Institute on May 21. Judith Phillips-Balter will present two Shabbat afternoon lectures, "Why Do Prophets Quote One Another?" You can keep up with new activities through the website and through CRZ emails.
We have two book groups that meet monthly—one Monday mornings and one Wednesday evenings—both of which welcome new readers. Check their webpages to keep track of future reading choices. We also have fun playing mah jongg on Tuesday afternoons.
New members and prospective members are always welcome at all Sisterhood functions. If you aren't currently a Sisterhood member, you can join at any of our open meetings—or you can contact our synagogue office. Jewish women who are not members of the Congregation may join Sisterhood.
Among our other projects, Sisterhood raises funds to subsidize congregational programs. You can help…
- by doing your gift and holiday shopping at the Nelson Judaica and Gift Shop, where profits support Sisterhood contributions to the Congregation. Our terrific team of Sisterhood volunteers provides items both basic and amusing. Come here first for all your Judaica and gift needs.
- by participating in our High Holy Day Greetings program. Thanks to all of you who have added your names to the New Years Greetings listed in the fall Rodfei Zedek Welcome Book. Thanks to Sheila Schwartz for her fine work on this project!
- by making honor contributions throughout the year. Adele Bernstein, our Social Secretary, will send personalized greetings, congratulations, and condolence messages to your family and friends when you make a contribution to Sisterhood in their honor. Those of us who have received Adele’s congratulatory notes attest to their authenticity, warmth, and personal meaning.
We also have two ongoing collections. If you have new small cosmetic and toiletry items, please bring them to the Sisterhood room on the second floor of our synagogue so that we may donate them to a local women’s shelter, where they are much appreciated. We are also happy to receive worn out mini fluorescent light bulbs and small electronics that should not be put into your trash or recyclable pickups. We will see that these items, which are hazardous in landfill, will go to the city’s disposal facility on Goose Island.
