Prayer: Shabbat

SATURDAY MORNING SERVICES

Shabbat morning services begin at 9:45 a.m.; at 10:30 Rabbi Gertel gives an introduction to the Torah portion, and then the Torah Service begins.  The Minchah service follows our Shabbat Kiddush.  From time to time, Rabbi Gertel invites members of the Congregation and other guest Shabbat speakers to the pulpit.

We use the Sim Shalom prayer book.  SiddurAudio.com is a resource for learning to chant the liturgy.  You can read more about our observance in "On Shabbat."

The lay-led Second Story Minyan is an intimate and informal service meeting once monthly during the academic year.  This minyan starts at 9:45 in the Glick Chapel and ends at the same time as the main service, enabling the community to come together for kiddush.  The minyan welcomes anyone who is interested to volunteer to lead part of the service, to read Torah, or simply to join us for davening.  If you are participating in the Tot Shabbat service, you're welcome to attend before or after.  5771 services about once a month during the academic year:  Rosh HaShanah services September 9 and 10 and Shabbat dates to be announced.  Call the synagogue office (773.752.2770) to confirm the date of this minyan's next Shabbat meeting or to reach minyan leaders.

Reading Torah and Haftorah

Rodfei Zedek has a fine tradition of Torah-reading by members of the congregation.  We read on the anniversary of b'nai mitzvah, for a yahrzeit, at family simchas, and whenever!  It's a service to the Congregation, and it deepens our own insight into Torah.  To sign up to read, contact the coordinator of Torah readers through the CRZ office at 773.752.2770.

Honors

Do you have a yahrzeit?  A special event?  Are you bringing a guest you wish to honor?  The gabbai will try to accommodate you if you call the office during the week at 773.752.2770 or alert the gabbai early in the Shabbat morning service.

The Mitzvah of Hospitality

Hosting a Kiddush on Shabbat is a lovely way to celebrate both Shabbat and a special event in your life, be it a birthday, a wedding anniversary, the anniversary of your Bar or Bat Mitzvah, or whatever it is that strikes your fancy.  Kiddush can be simple or elaborate, depending on your taste.  Please call the office to select a Shabbat or Yom Tov for hosting a Kiddush.
