Interactive Hyde Park Hagaddah

The Passover Seder, which means order, consists of fifteen steps. This year, we are inviting community members to “take a step” and make a short video of yourself (or family members) performing  or demonstrating one of the 15 parts of the Seder for inclusion in an interactive Hagaddah.

To help us create the Hagaddah please create and submit your clip to Rabbi Minkus by April 2, as follows:

  1.  Go to Doodle poll and select one of the 15 parts of the seder that you would like to perform/demonstrate/etc.
  2.  (Skip step 1 if you can't access the Doodle poll for some reason.)
  3. Make a short video clip by  reciting some of the text, reenacting a part of the story, explaining your family’s custom or practice of this step, telling a funny story, offering a creative interpretation or personal reflection on a step, or simply reading from your favorite Haggadah.
  4. Email your finished video clip (and questions or ideas) to Rabbi Minkus.

The Order/steps of the Seder

1. Kadesh – Sanctify the seder by reciting the kiddush/the blessing over the first cup of wine/grape juice as well as reciting the Shehiyanu blessing sanctifying the moment and holiday

2. Urchatz – Wash Your Hands

3. Karpas – Appetizer- typically this is a green vegetable (often romaine lettuce or parsley but I am sure there are many others).

4. Yachatz – Break the Middle Matzah, which will become the Afikomen.

5. Maggid – Tell the Story of the Exodus (you can use one, all, or none of these of these components).

  • Ha Lahma Anya/ This is the Bread of Affliction- this is when the Matzah is held up not as the bread of freedom but the bread our enslaved ancestors ate, a metaphor for our poverty/enslavement.

  •  Four Questions

  •  Four Children

  •  My father was a Wandering Aramean

  •  Ten Plagues

  •  Dayenu

  •  Rabban Gamliel- the Rabbi’s rule that one must at least, explain the significance or reasoning for having the Paschal sacrifice, matzah and maror in order to fulfill the obligation for a seder.

6. Rachtzah – Wash Your Hands Again.

7. Motzi – Blessing Over “Bread”

8. Matzah

9. Maror – Bitter Herbs

10. Korech – The Hillel Sandwich

11. Shulchan Orech – The Festive Meal

13. Beirach – Birkat Hamazon/blessing after meals- this part of the seder also includes drinking the Third Cup and opening the door for Eliyahu HaNavi/Elijah the Prophet

14. Hallel – Psalms of Praise

15. Nirtzah – Conclusion to the Seder (songs such as Adir Hu, Ehad Mi Yode’a/who knows one, and Had Gadya are sung).
