Must a Jew Believe Anything?
Saturday, September 17, 2022 • 21 Elul 5782
8:30 PM - 10:00 PMPrior to our Selichot service on Saturday, September 17, join us in person or over Zoom as we welcome David Gottlieb for a special program to usher in the High Holy Day season!
We will explore Jewish concepts of belief and obligation, and the sometimes complex relationship between the two. We will read brief selections from Tanakh, rabbinic literature, and Jewish philosophy, and we'll discuss: what it means to be a Jew; what it means to believe; and how we (post)moderns can productively live with ideas of obligation and belief.
David Gottlieb is Director of Jewish Studies at the Spertus Institute for Jewish Learning and Leadership in Chicago. David earned his PhD in the History of Judaism at the University of Chicago Divinity School in 2018. He is the author of Second Slayings: The Binding of Isaac and the Formation of Jewish Memory (Gorgias Press, 2019).
